Prospect Park Quarry, North Haledon, N.J.
Formation- the quarry cuts into the Preakness Basalt
The site is an active quarry which cuts through several basalt flows. To date we have been allowed to collect only on the uppermost two levels of the pit. On the uppermost zone the basalt exists primarily as pillow lavas with well mineralized voids and vugs. There is also a zone of very vesicular light greenish gray basalt in one section. The second level cuts through a more solid lava flow where mineralization occurs in prehnite lined voids in the lava, much fewer in number and with little "rind" between the minerals and the matrix.
